Baker Drilling Solutions

Baker Drilling Solutions (BDS) sees the need for experienced, competent personnel in todays drilling industry. We seek to provide the “right” personnel as subject matter experts for your conventional and unconventional drilling campaigns.

Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) is an adaptive drilling process used to precisely control the annular pressure profile throughout the wellbore. The objectives are to ascertain the downhole pressure environment limits and to manage the annular hydraulic pressure profile accordingly. The intention of MPD is to avoid continuous influx of formation fluids to the surface. Any influx incidental to the operation will be safely contained using an appropriate process. Any influx incidental to the operation will be safely contained using an appropriate process.[*]

Advantages of Managed Pressure Drilling:

  • Managed Pressure Drilling allows more accurate bottom hole pressure control, resulting in fewer pressure fluctuations and it allows better control of the well.
  • The use of Managed Pressure Drilling techniques can enable wells to be drilled whilst minimizing losses and kicks and possibly avoiding setting additional casing strings.
MPD Operations

Application of Managed Pressure Drilling

The field of wellbore pressure management has broad applications in the drilling industry and provides solutions to problems in:

  • Extending casing points to limit the total number of casing strings and subsequent hole size reduction
  • Limiting the NPT (Non-Productive Time) associated with differentially stuck pipe
  • Avoiding the lost circulation - well kick sequence
  • Limiting lost circulation
  • Drilling with total lost returns
  • Increasing the rate of penetration (ROP)
  • Deepwater drilling with lost circulation and water flows.
MPD Document Review

Baker Drilling Solutions has the qualified Subject Matter Experts to create, process and review MPD related documentation.

  • Experienced in I3P review of procedures for Operators to satisfy “New Technology Plans” as per API 92S: Managed Pressure Drilling Operations.
  • Our team has the expertise and capacity to create and/or review an entire catalog of MPD procedures. Whether a client is starting from scratch and new to MPD or established and looking for expert review and analysis, we have the team for any approach.
MPD Commissioning and Inspections

BDS personnel are equipped to audit and inspect MPD systems. Clients have varying needs in this field. BDS can help with building an acceptance program for MPD equipment, or our experts can be plugged into a team to carry out a program built by the client.

Some clients may need help with initial start-up and commissioning. We are well versed in start-ups of new technology and re-starting existing systems. Our teams seek to get the client over any hurdles and walk into MPD operations with confidence in the equipment on board.
